Position Overview
The Victoria Highland Games Association is seeking a passionate, detailed-oriented individual to join our team as the Museum Assistant at Craigflower Manor. The ideal applicant will have excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills, as well as a passion for heritage.
Craigflower Manor is a National Historic Site and Provincially Designated Heritage Site overseen by the Government of British Columbia, through the Heritage Branch of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport. Built in 1856, it is one of the oldest remaining farmhouses in BC.
Under the direction of the Board President the Museum Assistant will help protect the condition of the site, and the artifacts contained within it through regular cleaning and inspections, improve collection management at the site through inventory and other collection based activities, and help facilitate public access to the Manor through tours and drop in visits, . There may also be opportunities to create interpretive content for the site.
Initially the position represents an 8 hour week that can be accommodated over 2 or more days, with the possibility of additional hours. The schedule for access to and tours of the Manor will be posted to the Victoria Highland Games Association website.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide a friendly, welcoming environment for guests.
· Perform weekly cleaning tasks.
· Perform weekly pest inspections.
· Maintain the condition of the site and artifacts through proper mitigation of agents of deterioration.
· Report threats to the condition of the site or artifacts to Heritage Branch.
· Create an inventory of the Provincial Heritage Artifacts at the site and update the Provincial Heritage Artifact Database.
· Create and help implement engaging tours communicating the importance of the site for scheduled and drop-in visitors.
· Additional collection management, promotional, and community outreach activities as required.
Requirements
· Grade 12 graduate or equivalent.
· Experience handling artifacts in a museum, archive, cultural centre, or gallery setting.
· Experience giving presentations to diverse audiences.
Preferred Qualifications
· Knowledge of the history of Craigflower Manor.
· Experience in preventative conservation.
· Experience inventorying museum collections.
· Experience in creating interpretive content for museums, archives, cultural centres, or galleries.
· Post secondary training in museum studies, history, anthropology, archaeology, or conservation.
